A Difficult But Necessary Decision

Well it’s official, I’m not running the Wine & Dine Half Marathon this year.  B and I made the decision a few days ago that we were not going to travel down to Orlando next week and therefore I had to forgo running the race.  I’ve been lucky enough to participate in most of the runDisney races this year, but with that comes a price.

First is the obvious financial price.  Since I live over 1,000 miles from Walt Disney World and on the other side of the country from Disneyland, it costs a lot to travel to these races.  It’s not just airfare, but it’s rental cars, airport parking, pet sitters, hotels, food, etc…  Each event comes with a hefty price tag and that’s not even taking the race entry into account.  Last week we had to buy B a new car because his fabulous 2006 Mini Cooper with almost 160k miles on it was on her last legs.  It was unexpected, but necessary for him.  Also the holidays are coming up and we will have a ton of additional expenses coming our way.  We had to weigh the fun extravagance against our responsibilities and obviously the latter won out.

Second is the physical/emotional price.  Traveling takes a lot out of me.  It’s no secret that I am not a fan of flying, but I suck it up to go to my happy place.  That doesn’t mean that it’s not draining for me.  I have also not been feeling all that well lately (you can read about that over on RAD Living) so the thought of packing, getting on a plane and sleeping in a foreign bed for 5 nights was just not appealing to me.  In the past 2 months I have traveled A LOT and just need a break.  I just want to be home.  As much as I love Disney and my friends who I would be seeing next week, I just can’t do it.

Am I a bit disappointed?  Yes!  I LOVE the Wine & Dine Half Marathon.  It’s tied for my favorite race with Princess.  And Food & Wine Festival…ugh what I wouldn’t do for a lamb chop from Australia right now.  But I’ve realized that I just can’t do everything, even though I really want to.  I have to put my family and my health first and that’s why I’ve decided to take a break.  Next year I will definitely be cutting back on my travel so I can make it there for this race…it will be the 5th anniversary after all!

So as sad as I am that I won’t be there, I’m so excited to follow along with all of you during the weekend.  Send me your photos…I want to live vicariously through you!  I’ve also recruited some awesome guests to cover the weekend for me so we won’t be short on recaps over here.  Plus, it will be great to get some other perspectives than me rambling on like I always do 🙂

Good luck and I can’t want to see everyone with these awesome new medals on!

  • So hard when sometimes we need to be adults! I was just saying that I need to cut back on my Disney trips, it’s gotten a little out of control! Plus, there are a lot of non-Disney races that I’d love to do too.

Good for you for putting your health and family first, we’ll miss you! See you soon!

    • But I don’t want to grow up!!!!!
You are right, as much as I love Disney there are a lot of other places I want to see and things I want to do. Plus B isn’t a crazy Disney fan like I am, so it’s not fair to him.
We definitely need to get together soon up here in the NE!

  • I had this dilemma earlier this year. My runDisney trips have gotten to be a little excessive…I feel like I spend all my vacation resources on these trips – time off, money, trips to the kennel, etc. I totally get it! Hope you are feeling better soon and hope to see you at another race weekend!

    • I’ve been feeling the same way…I’ve pretty much exhausted all my vacation time with them. B wants to travel to other places and we need to start doing that.
Thanks so much and I’m sure I will see you soon! Congrats on the marathon BTW…AWESOME time!

  • There’s not doubt going to the Disney races is expensive! That’s why I use resources like booking.com and my credit card rewards from capital one to get a cheap hotel room and car rental. But it certainly does add up quickly once you set foot in the park gates when you need to eat, etc. I also wondered how you were managing the flights with your anxiety. Yes I bet it was draining to anticipate flying so often. Glad to hear you are smart enough to know when to not go to something you really really enjoy and take time to rest. Will you be there in January? Which races are you running?

    • It really does start adding up!
While I do have medication that helps me on the flights, the anticipation of traveling gets exhausting. I’ve gotten much better about it, but it’s still difficult. I just wish I was a good flyer!
I’m registered for the 10K and Half in January and right now I’m planning to be there. We need to get together up here sometime since we’re so close!

  • BUMMER … but I totally get it. Obviously your health comes first. And yes, I was adding up how much money I’ve spent on Disney trips and races in the past year, and I feel bad that I’m not heading to other places I really want to see. It’s hard to balance everything!

  • Sarah, I totally get why you are opting out of Wine and Dine. The physical not to mention financial implications of these race weekends at Disney can get completely out of control. I am actually driving down with 3 neighborhood friends who will be walking the 5k then going to the after party. It will be a fun girly trip and the savings on plane flights will be nice. See you in January and I hope you start feeling better soon.

  • I’m so sorry to hear all this, but completely understand. Your health always needs to come first.

I feel like Disney races have taken over all my vacations as well and as much as I love it, there’s a lot I’d like to see as well. My plan is just to pick my favorite time of year and only go once a year, after Princess weekend.

    • I think that will be the same for me. The in future, I see only Princess and Wine & Dine as the races I’ll run.

  • Admit it, you cancelled as soon as you found out I wasn’t going to be there this weekend? 😉

Save up your energy, and pennies, we’re gonna kick 2014’s ass!
