RAD Reads and Weekly Review: February 3, 2013

Yesterday Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow, which apparently means an early spring…woohoo!!  I’m so over winter and can’t wait to put on some flip flops again.  But really, what does a groundhog know about weather?  The whole ceremony around Groundhog’s Day is a little strange to begin with…what’s with those top hats??


I would like to take a second and thank everyone who has read my Walt Disney World Marathon recaps this week.  The response I have received has been incredibly overwhelming and humbling.  It was a difficult day for me and to know that my journey and my struggles have inspired others to take on a new challenge makes it all worth while.  I originally ran this race for me, to prove to myself that I was strong enough to do it.  But now it has turned into so much more than that.  I really ran this for you because if someone like me can do it, so can you…no excuses.  DO IT!

Weekly Review
Last Sunday I finally got out to try my new Asics GT-2000s and so far so good!  I got in 3 miles and tried to work on speed as much as possible.  I was going for negative splits, but ended up slowing down that final mile because the wind was in my face.  It was like running into a wall!  It was also pretty cold.  I waited until about 1:00 pm and it was only 33 degrees, but the sun warmed me up a bit.  It was a gorgeous day and I was glad to get back out there…I even saw a swan in the Sound!



During the marathon, I was having some pain in what I think is my biceps femoris muscle.  It got better a few days later, so I didn’t think much of it.  Well about halfway through my run on Sunday it started acting up again.  It’s a little concerning, but I’m not overly worried yet.  I’m going to keep an eye on it before Princess and really focus on stretching the area.  Fingers crossed it’s nothing big.

Sunday: 3.34 mile run
Monday: Rest
Tuesday: CrossFit – 1 hour – Dead Lifts, Power Cleans & 20 min AMRAP
Wednesday: 1:05 min plank + 50 air squats
Thursday: CrossFit – 1 hour – Bench Press & Air Dyne
Friday: CrossFit – 1 hour – AMRAPs of Wall Balls, Ring Rows & Rowing + 1:03 min plank
Saturday: Rest

It felt great to get 4 full workouts in this week, but I need to get back up to 5!  Soon enough.  This weather just needs to get a little better for me.  I just can’t bring myself to get on the treadmill to get those extra runs in…sigh.

Last but not not least, I’d like to give a big shout out to one of my favorite people, Krysten from The Misadventures of a Darwinian Fail.  On Friday she underwent surgery to fix her robot heart…again.  In the days leading up to the surgery, she remained as positive as ever even though she was facing a frightening experience.  She came out of a successful surgery and posted this photo on Instagram.  Krysten is a true inspiration and always reminds me to look on the bright side of things even when faced with a challenge.  WE HEART YOU!

  • I really liked that article on proper form. I saw some pics of myself from the 5k in October and I noticed that my arms are swinging way in front of my body as well and I probably am not holding them correctly. Once I get back to running I’ll work on it (I’ve got some IT issues going on so I’m going to PT and was told not to run for a few weeks).

    How much longer until the Princess? I can’t wait to hear about it when you return! Great update Sarah!

    • It’s amazing how changing your form and your foot strike can make a HUGE difference in your running efficiency! I made a lot of changes this past summer and have seen real improvement.

      About 2.5 weeks until Princess…can’t wait!! It will be such a different experience now that I have a bunch of races under my belt 🙂
