Character Photo Opportunities at runDisney Events

One of the most unique things about runDisney events are the character photo opportunities.  These magical experiences are set up in all events from the 5Ks to the WDW Marathon.  You will find the popular characters that you see in the parks on a regular basis, but you will also find some very unique characters as well.  I’ve seen Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum, they Hyennas from the Lion King, and Flora, Fauna & Merryweather from Sleeping Beauty!  Here are some of my favorite photos:

Aurora, Prince Phillip, Flora, Fauna & Merryweather
Li Shang, Mushu & Mulan
Lilo & Stitch

While all of these photo stops are great, I think my overall favorite of all the characters are the gravediggers.  I’ve never stopped for a photo because the line is always REALLY long, but everyone always looks like they are having a blast.  Maybe I’ll just have to run faster for the next race so I will have more of a time cushion to wait in that line.

Now if we could just get an Aristocats photo op set up, that would be my ultimate runDisney experience!

What is your favorite character photo op during a Disney race?  Is there a character you would like to see?

  • I love your Aristocats idea! I am thinking I want to dress up as Marie at the Tinkerbell 1/2 🙂

  • Love your pictures.I am attending the tower of terror 10 miler marathon in september in wdw hoping that sone rare characters will attend.Do you think they will its a night marathon?

    • Thanks Mike! Even with the night races, Disney still goes all out with the character opportunities. I’m hoping they will go all out for the inaugural year of this race! See ya in September 🙂

  • Hello, I am running the WDW 1/2 this January, and I’m wondering how people can wait in line for photos and not fall behind in the race?? I want to get some special pictures, but I don’t want to have to book it to keep pace. Do you have any suggestions or insight on how that works?

    • Hey Jessica…that’s a great question!

If you’re planning on stopping for photos you really need to factor that into your pace time. The minimum required pace for runDisney races is a 16 minute mile, so you should have your pace faster than that. It will depend on how many photos you want to stop for and how popular the characters are. I’ve found that the first few photo stops tend to have more of a line as I think people get excited and just jump in. So maybe wait for some of the later characters.

Also, the higher the corral you start in, the more of a “time cushion” you will have behind you. The corrals usually go off 5-7 minutes apart from each other so you can factor that into your photo time as well.

I would suggest running with some sort of watch or phone app to keep track of your time so you can make sure you are not falling too far behind and run the risk of getting swept. Overall, the cast members taking the photos have it down pat so the lines tend to move fairly quickly.

      Good luck in the race!!
