When I first started running, I listened to podcasts. They helped divert my attention from the strenuous task of just getting to 1.5 miles. I would switch between Disney, running, humor and other miscellaneous podcasts. As my runs got longer, this just wasn’t cutting it. I needed more motivation; so I sat down to make a playlist to get me going.
The key for me is variation. Fast paced dance songs, bubbly pop songs and hard rock ‘n roll round out my list. It’s pretty amazing to me how one song can pick me up when I’m feeling like I have nothing left in me. During today’s run, I felt tapped out at 4.5 miles and then “Hair” by Lady Gaga came on and I dug down to take off for another ¾ of a mile.
Then there are the songs that are my perfect running tempo. They make running fun as I rhythmically bounce along to the music. There are two songs in particular that do this for me; “Music is the Victim” by Scissor Sisters and “She’s Alright” by the best band ever, Stereophonics.
I try to find new songs and add them to my list on occasion so I don’t get bored. Today I added “We Found Love” by Rhianna, “Good Feelin’” by Flo Rida and “Moves Like Jagger” by Maroon 5, all of which were great high energy additions to get me through my boring treadmill run.
I think this is why I enjoy Disney races so much. Both before and during the race runDisney provides some serious musical entertainment. There is a DJ to get you pumped up prerace, who even leads the runners in dances! Then throughout the course there is music everywhere throughout the parks and along the various long stretches to help break up the monotony.
Here are some of my other favorite songs to run to. What are yours?
“Teddy Picker” – Arctic Monkeys
“Grenade” – Bruno Mars
“You Make Me Feel…” – Cobra Starship
“Around the World/ Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” – Daft Punk
“LoveStoned/ I Think She Knows” – Justin Timberlake
“The Edge of Glory” – Lady Gaga
“Uprising” – Muse
“Idioteque” – Radiohead
