The Kindness of the Running Community

The Wine & Dine Half Marathon Expo was, um, crowded. This was the first, and probably last, time I will show up at a race expo first thing in the morning. I arrived early because I wanted to get it out of the way so I could go enjoy my day in Walt Disney World and also to grab a pair of the Disney New Balance sneakers. It’s a good thing I did because the line was already super long 30 minutes before the Expo opened!

After grabbing the shoes, it seemed like the best time to head over to the official runDisney merchandise booth. Certain items have been known to sell out quickly so it made sense to just go there first. It was a bit chaotic, but manageable. I grabbed the few things I wanted (pins, vinylmation and a water bottle) and got in line to check out.

The morning started off chilly but quickly warmed up. Plus with all the bodies in the Expo, I was quite warm in my tech hoodie. So I tied it around my purse…something I’ve done countless times. Well sometime between paying for my runDisney merch (a remember seeing it in line!) and walking to the Expo exit, my hoodie feel off. In a panic, I retraced my steps to find it but no luck. This all happened within about 2 minutes…no hoodie!

I was super bummed because 1. it is my favorite running hoodie and 2. I was planning on wearing it for the cold, rainy race the next night. I headed up to the Services Center at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and filled out a lost item card, but had little hope that it would be returned.

What do you know? The next morning I received a call from Sharon at ESPN saying she thought she found it. Oh My! Well low and behold, when I arrived, there it was. Sharon seemed just as excited as I was to reunite me with my hoodie and she truly made my day…and race!

I’ve always thought that the running community is made up of special people. There is something kind and supportive within all of us. Probably because we have all endured the humbling experience that is running. This experience just proved that point!

So thank you kind person who found my hoodie and took it to lost and found.  Because of you I was able to run a warmer (sadly not drier) Wine & Dine Half Marathon!

Do you feel the same way about the running community?  Have you ever lost one of your favorite pieces of running gear?

A Difficult But Necessary Decision

Well it’s official, I’m not running the Wine & Dine Half Marathon this year.  B and I made the decision a few days ago that we were not going to travel down to Orlando next week and therefore I had to forgo running the race.  I’ve been lucky enough to participate in most of the runDisney races this year, but with that comes a price.

First is the obvious financial price.  Since I live over 1,000 miles from Walt Disney World and on the other side of the country from Disneyland, it costs a lot to travel to these races.  It’s not just airfare, but it’s rental cars, airport parking, pet sitters, hotels, food, etc…  Each event comes with a hefty price tag and that’s not even taking the race entry into account.  Last week we had to buy B a new car because his fabulous 2006 Mini Cooper with almost 160k miles on it was on her last legs.  It was unexpected, but necessary for him.  Also the holidays are coming up and we will have a ton of additional expenses coming our way.  We had to weigh the fun extravagance against our responsibilities and obviously the latter won out.

Second is the physical/emotional price.  Traveling takes a lot out of me.  It’s no secret that I am not a fan of flying, but I suck it up to go to my happy place.  That doesn’t mean that it’s not draining for me.  I have also not been feeling all that well lately (you can read about that over on RAD Living) so the thought of packing, getting on a plane and sleeping in a foreign bed for 5 nights was just not appealing to me.  In the past 2 months I have traveled A LOT and just need a break.  I just want to be home.  As much as I love Disney and my friends who I would be seeing next week, I just can’t do it.

Am I a bit disappointed?  Yes!  I LOVE the Wine & Dine Half Marathon.  It’s tied for my favorite race with Princess.  And Food & Wine Festival…ugh what I wouldn’t do for a lamb chop from Australia right now.  But I’ve realized that I just can’t do everything, even though I really want to.  I have to put my family and my health first and that’s why I’ve decided to take a break.  Next year I will definitely be cutting back on my travel so I can make it there for this race…it will be the 5th anniversary after all!

So as sad as I am that I won’t be there, I’m so excited to follow along with all of you during the weekend.  Send me your photos…I want to live vicariously through you!  I’ve also recruited some awesome guests to cover the weekend for me so we won’t be short on recaps over here.  Plus, it will be great to get some other perspectives than me rambling on like I always do 🙂

Good luck and I can’t want to see everyone with these awesome new medals on!

The 2013 Disney Wine and Dine Half Marathon is now open for registration!  This event is the ultimate Runners Night Out and probably my favorite runDisney event!  I mean can you really go wrong when you get to run through 3 parks and end at the Food & Wine Festival?!  This is the 4th year this race is being held and every year it gets better…can’t wait to see what’s in store for 2013.

This nighttime race begins at 10:00 pm on November 9th at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.  The course takes runners through Animal Kingdom, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and finishes at Epcot.  It’s the only Disney Half Marathon to take you through 3 parks!

029 W&D MedalThe price tag for the Wine & Dine Half Marathon is a bit higher than other Disney races, but it includes a lot of extras.  You get the usual amazing Disney entertainment on the course, a tech shirt, and race medal, but also included is admission to the Finish Line Party at Epcot and a $10 gift card!  The Finish Line Party has turned into a great event for runners and their supporters.  runDisney quickly learned from their mistakes after the first year was very over crowded, and opened up Future World for the party.  Now select attractions including Soarin’, Test Track, Mission: SPACE, and Maelstrom are open from 10:30 pm – 4:00 am for those attending the party.  Another added bonus is that all of the Food & Wine Festival kiosks are open during the party, which is great for a post-race snack and use for that $10 gift card!

Also taking place that weekend is Mickey’s Jingle Jungle 5k and Kids Races.  The 5K takes place at Disney’s Animal Kingdom on November 9th as well, but this event is in the morning.  The Kids Races will be held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex that same afternoon.  Talk about a busy racing day!
