This is one of my favorite series from two of my favorite Disney Bloggers, Estelle from This Happy Place and Melissa from Mouse on the Mind. It’s so fun to see all of the different opinions on what people love and
hate don’t love about the Walt Disney World Resort! It’s also a great way to discover new blogs through the blog hop…so make sure to check those out!
This month we’re taking a look at thrill rides in Walt Disney World. This is a tough one! I’m a big fan of most of the WDW thrill rides, particularly because of the high level of detail. These attractions submerge you into the surroundings and you often forget about the crazy thrills that lie ahead until they are right upon you making it all the more thrilling! Let’s get started:
Kill – Mission: SPACE
My dislike for this attraction is twofold. First, it is INSANELY claustrophobic. From the moment that they close that door (or is it a wall?) until the end of our trip to Mars, I am filled with anxiety. The screen is too close to my face, I can’t see what’s going on around me and the G-Force is very uncomfortable. Oh and the fact that an attraction has barf bags never sits well with me.
Second, it replaced my beloved Horizons. From Jules Verne to Brava Centauri, I loved every moment of this attraction and still lament it’s departure every time I am in Future World.
Refurb – Splash Mountain
When this attraction first opened, I couldn’t get enough of it. I think at one point in the early 90s I rode it 6 times in one night and was significantly soaked for the trip back to the hotel.
Since the attraction is now over 20 years old, it is starting to show it’s age. There always seems to be something that isn’t working, the details are fading and it just doesn’t have the pizzazz that it originally did. Also, the addition of those lap bars have made the seats very small and uncomfortable. I mean really, were those necessary?!? Overall, it could just use a complete overhaul to liven it up a bit.
Marry – The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror
Yes, I know this is shocking! OK, not really…this was an obvious choice for me. Unlike Splash Mountain, this attraction has only improved with age. The way it continues to eerily loom at the end of Sunset Boulevard building on your suspense as you approach the attraction. The dust over the years can only add to the creepiness of the hotel lobby. The addition of the random drop sequences leaves you anticipating what will come next! Everything, all the details…it’s just the perfect thrill ride!!
I also have a soft spot for this attraction because it is the first one that B and I ever rode together and we got this awesome pic!
Now it’s time for you to play along! Here is the full list of all of the thrill rides at Walt Disney World. What are your choices for thrill rides to Kill, Refurb, Marry??

The medal for The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10-Miler is undoubtedly one of the coolest runDisney medals (or ANY race medals) out there. It glows in the dark, has a moving elevator and features one of the coolest attractions in all of Walt Disney World…how can you go wrong?!
For the inaugural year, the theme of the medal seemed to be orange, which goes along with the Halloween theme of that whole race weekend. The medal ribbon was orange, the logo background was orange, etc… I actually liked this since it was very different from the other races the runDisney offers. But this year, it looks like they are changing it up.
Stitch has been a synonymous character with The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror attraction (not sure why…) and you can find him in a lot of the attraction merchandise dressed at a bellhop. He was also on the “I Did It” shirt for the race last year.
So it only makes sense that he would be now be featured on the medal ribbon right?? Don’t worry, the super cool medal is still the same!
What do you think of the new medal ribbon?
|February 14, 2012||Posted by Running at Disney under runDisney Races, Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10-Miler|
The newest race on the runDisney lineup, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10-Miler Weekend, is now open for registration. The race will take place on September 29, 2012 and replaces The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 13K, which was last held in 2009. As a HUGE fan of this attraction, this race promises to be very exciting!
The nighttime race will begin at 10:00 pm in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, taking runners to the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and back to the Studios. Runners will re-enter the park at the Lights, Motors, Action Extreme Stunt Show, wind through the Streets of America and finish on Sunset Boulevard at The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. There will be the usual Disney entertainment on the course and runners can expect a unique inaugural race medal.
The race is followed by the Disney Villains Hollywood Bash, which will be held from 10:30 pm – 3:00 am. Spectators will be able to purchase tickets to this party and enter before the race is over. Not only will runners and spectators have exclusive access to the Studios, but most headliner attractions will be open. The attractions include: Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror (obviously), Star Tours, Muppet-Vision 3D, The Great Movie Ride, and Toy Story Mania! While this party sounds great, here’s where my concern begins. I’m having flashbacks of the inaugural Wine & Dine Half Marathon After Party and the limited space that was available for runners and spectators. Sunset Boulevard is a very congested area and if this is where the finish line for the race is, how are guests going to get to those headline attractions during the after party. The Studios overall is much smaller than World Showcase at Epcot and I’m hoping we won’t run into the same issues.
Also taking place on the race weekend is a Family Fun Run 5k and Kids Races, both of which will be taking place at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. I have to say, I’m a little disappointed about the 5K taking place at the Sports Complex. The fun of Disney races is being able to run through the theme parks and see areas you don’t normally get to see. The course description also says that you will be running on various terrains including pavement, grass and sand.” This doesn’t seem very safe for the many inexperienced runners who participate in these 5Ks. It’s my prediction that attendance for this race will be very low in comparison to other 5Ks.
Pricing for the events are as follows:
The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror™ 10-Miler
- $90 by March 27, 2012
- $105 between March 28 and May 22, 2012
- $120 on or after May 23, 2012
Disney Family Fun Run 5K
- $50 per participant
runDisney Kids’ Races
- $10 per child
Disney Villains Hollywood Bash
- $44 per person by August 31, 2012
- $54 per person on or after September 1, 2012
As usual for most runDisney events, packet pick-up will be required at the race Expo held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex beginning September 28, 2012. Visit the runDisney event page for more information on all of the events taking place that weekend.
I hope to see you there as we enter the fifth dimension!!
