RAD Recap for August 31, 2014

I want to start by congratulating everyone who ran one of the races over Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend!!  I’ve had a blast following along and have some great guest recaps coming up in the next few weeks, including one from Jenny who completed her first half marathon and runDisney race…CONGRATS!!

I’ve spent the past week with my favorite people at one of my favorite places, Disney’s Vero Beach Resort.  It was relaxing, fun and full of laughs.  This is a trip I look forward every year and I am so lucky to get to spend this quality time with my friends…I hope there will always be Days Like This 🙂

Before heading home, B and I spent a night in Walt Disney World at Bay Lake Tower.  If you follow me on Instagram, you will have seen all of the fun I had in the Magic Kingdom for a few short hours, followed by dinner at California Grill and Wishes! from the Top of the World.  What a great day!

After we returned to Connecticut yesterday afternoon, we stopped by the grand opening of Black Hog Brewing Co. before heading home.  Our friends from Caseus in New Haven started this awesome brewery that focuses on craft beer using local ingredients.  My favorite was Granola Brown…YUM!

Hard to believe that this weekend is the unofficial end of summer, but there are a lot of fun events coming up in the fall.  runDisney races, the Disney Fit Challenge, Epcot International Food & Wine Festival just to name a few!  Oh boy!  What are you most excited about?

The Inaugural Glass Slipper Challenge Part II – Disney Princess Half Marathon

Ahh that 2:30 am runDisney alarm…  Slightly a bit more rested than the day before, Amanda and I went through the motions of getting ready in the dark and getting all of our running gear in order.  Would you believe that 2 days in a row I forgot to put deodorant on for the races?!?!  My apologies to everyone around me…  We headed to the bus, bleary eyed, but ready for Part 2 of the Glass Slipper Challenge!

This was the 3rd year Amanda and I ran this race together and it really has become “our race.”  I have to admit that with my recent miscarriage and other health issues, I was really considering not running this year.  I hadn’t been training and I just didn’t think I was up for it.  But a few weeks prior to the race Amanda convinced me that it was just what I needed to get myself back in gear and if we had to walk the whole thing we would.  So with that added determination we took on our 3rd Princess Half Marathon together 🙂

Before I knew it, the countdown had begun and we were off!  There’s the start line in the distance from the haze of the firework smoke hanging heavy in the fog…

Oh the fog?  Yeah the humidity was thick that morning, just like ALL Disney races.  We started off doing the Galloway run/walk approach with 60 second runs/30 second walks, which is what we did most of the the day before for the 10K.  Right off the bat, I was struggling.  I had no energy and was having trouble catching my breath.  I was getting very frustrated and couldn’t figure out what was going on.  Then just before mile 2 it dawned on me…I didn’t take a Gu before starting the race.  I was running on very low fuel, as that half bagel with pb and banana over 2 hours ago was clearly running low.  Well that was dumb!  I think between the combination of exhaustion and excitement, I forgot about the basics.  So I popped a Gu and in about 10 minutes was already feeling better.

My favorite part about runDisney races is “running” into friends along the way, and as we made our way to to the Magic Kingdom we ran into some great friends!

We ran into our pal Shaene in the parking lot of the Transportation & Ticket Center (TTC).  I was SO excited to see him because it was at this point in the TTC parking lot where 3 1/2 years ago that we all took off on Mickey’s Halloween 5K, our first 5K ever!  At that time were were just a bunch of Disney geeks looking for a new way to experience our favorite place on earth…look at us now 🙂

One of my favorite parts about being at the TTC for a race are the amazing drummers.  They come just after you reach the Mile 4 marker and the energy is amazing!

Another mile and we made it to the best part of the race…the Magic Kingdom!  The sight of that castle in the distance with hundreds of cheering spectators NEVER gets old.

Now I know I’ve mentioned this before, but I need to reinforce it.  One of the BEST things about Disney races are the real bathrooms.  Not only is it due to the lack of hot, stinky port-a-pottiness, but being about to wash your hands and splash some water on your face is so refreshing mid-race.  Look how happy Amanda is about real bathrooms!

The best bathrooms to stop at are between Liberty Square and Frontierland.  They are large and never have a line.  Skip the first few you see and head here.

After a quick pit stop we hit Mile 6…

Then had the worst photo taken at one of the best photo ops on course.  Choose your photographers wisely people!

Then we got a good backstage look at Splash Mountain…

And then I hit the wall…

Making that left onto Floridian Way meant the loooooong road back to Epcot and I was getting tired.  My lack of training was setting in, my feet started to hurt and I just didn’t want to go anymore.  I said to Amanda “I think this is my last half.”  I had completely lost all motivation.  She didn’t say much, but stuck with me and I sincerely thanked her.  Then I heard just what I needed…”Who else would I do this with?  This is our race.”  Sigh.  After all the crap I’d been through the weeks before I basically lost it.  I had to hold myself back from ugly crying at mile 8 and I could hardly breath.

That’s what it took me to realize why I was there.  I needed this race, I needed to struggle, I needed to wipe away all the hurt.  It finally felt great to just let it all go.  Damn I love that girl.  And that was it…for the rest of the race I had a blast.

I have a few favorite photo ops that are now becoming a tradition for me at the end of this race.  It’s actually really fun to get the same shot and compare it to the prior year!  First is this crazy Fairy Godmother, who shouts jokes to all the runners.  I love her!

Next is a tradition I now do during all of my half marathons since I did it during my first…take a photo at the Mile 13 marker.  I remember being SO EXCITED that I had made it 13 miles and that excitement never seems to get old 🙂

We crossed that finish line and I started balling (queue the ugly cry!) because I really didn’t think I would be able to accomplish this challenge.  My body was not ready for 19.3 miles, but I managed to squeeze it out.  I don’t know how, but I did!  I had done this challenge before with the Dumbo Double Dare Challenge, but this was so much harder and meant so much more to me.

After getting both of our medals, Amanda and I headed to meet B and watch the rest of the runners cross the finish line.  I love doing this and encouraging everyone on.

We also got to see something I’ve always wanted to see…the last person cross the finish line.  What I love about runDisney is that they celebrate those that come in towards the end as much (if not more!) than the leaders.  We found out that the woman who was last to cross had just lost her two children in a fire.  She was arm and arm with her two friends dressed in rainbow tutus and Mickey, Minnie and Goofy joined them for the walk to the finish line.  Well if I wasn’t emotional enough…this just put me over the edge.  I yelled and cheered for her and I, once again, ugly cried for her…

And like that my 3rd Princess Half Weekend was complete, but this time I had some extra bling and some extra pride to take home with me.  Those 2 days were HARD, but I’m so glad that Amanda pushed me to do them.  Sometimes you just need that cheerleader to get you over that slump.  I’m not done with running, but I will definitely be scaling back this year.  However, I do actually think I will continue to do Princess every year…it is our race after all.

Reflecting on my Walt Disney World Marathon While Finding Inspiration in Others

Today was the Walt Disney World Marathon and spending it at home in Connecticut was not what I expected.  But I’ve had to focus on me and my health lately and that meant less travel over the past few months.  I’ve been glued to social media for the past few days watching my friends race and cheering everyone on virtually, and of course it has had me reflect back on my Walt Disney World Marathon experience one year ago.

Never in my life did I think I would run a marathon.  I’m not built like a runner.  I’m short, stocky, chubby, muscular…all of the things a marathoner is not.  But when the 20th Anniversary of the Walt Disney World Marathon was announced, I registered.  I didn’t train properly and I was sick for the race, but I finished.  It was one of the hardest and most painful things I’ve ever done in my life, but I am so proud that I did it. This non-marathoner IS a marathoner and nothing will every change that.  You can read about the days leading up to the race and my marathon recaps if you want to relive all the painful fun moments with me.

After the race, I knew I never wanted to do that again.  People kept telling me I would change my mind, but I knew and still know that that marathon was my one and only.  But then today happened and I thought maybe, just maybe I will do this again one day.

How can you not help but to feel inspired by these runners?!?!

There’s Ashley who ran her first marathon today and raised over $2,700 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society…all this with a smile on her face.

Nichole who completed her first Goofy Race and a Half Challenge…I remember running the 2012 Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10-Miler with her which was her first big race.  Now look at her!

Kim who finished the Dopey Challenge after completing her final chemotherapy treatment just last week and a long battle with breast cancer.  Makes my struggles seem minuscule…

And then there is my runDisney inspiration, Amanda.  She didn’t complete the Goofy Race and a Half Challenge last year and set out with fire under her ass to conquer Dopey this year.  Guess what she did and I couldn’t be prouder!

I watched my friends and RAD readers run that race with smiles on their face and enjoying every magical mile.  I found myself reliving all of the good things about the marathon instead of the bad.  Running through Cinderella’s Castle, hugging a goat, seeing B and my Mom at mile 16, running down Hollywood Boulevard, getting that medal at the end…all such wonderful memories!

Who knows if I will ever run a marathon again, but the reality is that I probably won’t.  I just don’t enjoy the distance.  But I do know that I will be back at WDW Marathon weekend to run in one of the races and to most definitely cheer on everyone who inspires me out there.  I don’t regret not going this year because it was the right decision for me, but I am sad that I didn’t get to hug my best friend at the finish line and cheer on ALL the amazing runners who ran throughout the weekend.  Thank you all for being RAD!!!

Friday Feast: Epcot Food & Wine Festival with Friends

Epcot’s International Food & Wine Festival is by far my favorite time of year in Walt Disney World.  Wait…have I said that before?? 🙂  So of course I was incredibly excited when my good friend Rick asked me to join him at some of the booths to film a few episodes of his series Travel With Rick.  Food, wine, beer, Disney and friends…um YES PLEASE!

So here is where I got to visit (I’ve highlighted everything I tried):

Cheese

This was the 2nd year that I was able to review this booth and this year I have mixed feelings.  While I really enjoyed the selection of cheeses, the blue cheese souffle was odd and now very appetizing.  Here are all of the offerings:

  • Almond Crusted Blue Cheese Soufflé with Fig Jam
  • Artisan Cheese Selection: Flagship Reserve Cheddar, La Bonne Vie Triple Crème Brie, Wijngaard Goats Gouda
  • Once Upon a Vine’s The Lost Slipper Sauvignon Blanc 
  • Once Upon a Vine’s The Fairest Chardonnay
  • Once Upon a Vine’s The Big Bad Red Blend
  • Once Upon a Vine’s A Charming Pinot 

France

You can rarely go wrong with France and this year was no exception.  I was a big fan of almost everything…Rick even got me to try the escargot!  Here’s what they have:

  • Escargots Persillade en Brioche (Garlic and Parsley Snails in Brioche)
  • Boeuf Bourguignon (Braised Short Ribs in Cabernet with Mashed Potatoes) 
  • Crème Brûlée au Chocolat au Lait (Chocolate Milk Crème Brûlée topped with Caramelized Sugar)
  • Beer Kronenbourg Blanc
  • Chardonnay, Macon-Villages, La Côte Blanche
  • Cabernet Sauvignon, Bordeaux, Château Bonnet
  • Sparkling Pomegranate Kir
  • Eiffel Sour Cosmo Slush (Vodka, Grey Goose Cherry Noir, Grand Marnier, Cranberry Juice)

Scotland

This booth is new this year and is definitely one of my favorites.  There wasn’t one thing that I didn’t enjoy here and really, how can you go wrong with Scotch?!  Get all of these things:

  • Seared Scottish Salmon with Cauliflower Puree, Watercress and Malt Vinaigrette 
  • Vegetarian Haggis with Neeps and Tatties-Griddled Vegetable Cake with Rutabaga and Mashed Potatoes 
  • Scottish Banoffee Tart with Bananas, Scottish Whisky Toffee, Walkers Shortbread Crumbles and Sweet Cream
  • Innis & Gunn® Original 
  • Loch Lomond featuring Glenfiddich® 12 year
  • Glenfiddich® Scotch Flight (12, 15 and 18 year)

Craft Beers

Always a winner in my book and it’s even more fun when I get to share beer flights with my girl Amanda.  We tried all the beers!

  • Beer Flight 1: Dogfish Head Brewery Namaste, Abita Brewing Company Fall Fest, Leinenkugel’s® Seasonal Shandy, Florida Beer Company Devil’s Triangle 
  • Beer Flight 2: New Belgium Brewing Company Fat Tire, Widmer Brother s Brewing Alchemy Ale, Red Hook Audible Ale, Sierra Nevada Torpedo® 

After sampling all of the awesomeness that Food & Wine had to offer, we all met at our favorite spot, the Top of the World Lounge, to review our favorite and not so favorite items from the festival.  Don’t mind the blender in the background!

There are still 11 days to enjoy Epcot’s Food & Wine Festival and eat all the food you can!  What do you want to try most at this year’s Food & Wine Festival?

RAD Reads and Weekly Review: September 15, 2013

This photo cracks me up.  Not only because it’s slightly ridiculous, but I just love how I have friends who are all on the same wave length.  Obviously we didn’t spend the entire trip hidden behind our laptops.  We went kayaking, swimming, played mini-golf, ate a TON of food and had numerous adult beverages.  The 2nd year at the Disney Beach House was the best yet and I can’t wait to share more details with you about Disney’s Vero Beach Resort…it’s quickly topping my list of favorite resorts!

As a great way to end the week, a few of us headed out to Walt Disney World on Friday to not only play in parks for a bit:

Weekly Review
My past week definitely involved a TON of relaxation, but I did manage to squeeze in a few good workouts.  Our kayaking trip was an incredible upper body workout!  Here are all of my workouts from this week and to view a complete list of WODs, visit my dailymile page.

Sunday: Rest

Tuesday: Kayaking: 4.7 miles (4 hours)
Wednesday: Rest
Thursday: 20 min amrap: goblet squats, db thrusters & pushups
Friday: Magic Kingdom Walking (4 miles)
Saturday: Magic Kingdom Walking (5 miles)

The 20 minutes amrap I did on Thursday was at the resort gym called Anchors A-Weigh.  Love the name!

Definitely not my style…  But I made the best of it, grabbed a dumbbell and made up my own workout.

I did a quick 1/4 mile warmup run on the treadmill, which was awkward because I had a mirror right in my face…yikes!  Then I did the following 20 minute amrap (as many rounds as possible):

  • 15 goblet squats (20#)
  • 10 dumbbell snatches (20# x 4 & 30# x 4)
  • 10 pushups

I started with 5 burpees instead of the pushups, but realized by quads were quickly going to get burnt out with those, so I switched to pushups for round 2.  I got in a total of 8 rounds and was a sweaty mess after.  This workout was so tough that my quads and glutes are STILL sore 3 days later…crazy.

Tomorrow I will be starting the Lurong Living Paleo Challenge which is 8 weeks on the Paleo diet along with 10 workouts.  My weight will be taken, my measurements will be taken, photos will be taken…ahhhh!  I’m a bit nervous and excited at the same time.  I will be covering the whole thing over on RAD Living, so make sure to head over there and check it out!
