2013 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend Final Race Instructions

DL Half Final Instructions Logo

The 2013 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend begins in only 9 days!!  Since this is my first time out to Disneyland (are you sick of hearing that yet?!?), I’ve been reviewing all of the race instructions to make sure I know everything that is going on.  I’m much more comfortable on race day when I know exactly when and where I have to be!

The following instructions include all of the information you will need about the Half Marathon, 10K, 5K, Dumbo Double Dare Challenge and Kids Races.  Let’s take a look (click on the image for a larger version):

The weekend kicks off with the Health & Fitness Expo on Friday, August 30th. The Expo will take place in the Exhibit Hall of the Disneyland Hotel and the hours are as follows:

  • Friday, August 30th: 10:00 am – 8:00 pm
  • Saturday, August 31st: 10:00 am – 5:00 pm

All race participants must first go to the Lower Exhibit Hall to turn in signed waivers (click here to print your waiver) and pick-up your race bib.  This is also where you will receive any commemorative items you may have purchased during registration.  You will then proceed to the Upper Exhibit Hall to get your shirt and gEAR bag.  If you are unable to attend the expo, you can arrange for an absentee pick-up by filing out an authorization form (found here) and providing the person picking up your bib with a photo copy of your ID and signed waiver.

The following is all of the information you will need for Race Day.

  • Resort Transportation  For the entire race weekend, complimentary Anaheim Transportation Network (ART) shuttles will be transporting runners and spectators from select Good Neighbor Hotels to the Disneyland Esplanade.  I love that runDisney is providing this transportation!  So convenient.  If staying at a Good Neighbor hotel, make sure to check with the front desk for a schedule.  The shuttles are scheduled to make stops every 20 minutes during the following times:
    • Friday, August 30th: 6:20 am – 12:30 am
    • Saturday, August 31st: 3:30 am – 11:30 pm
    • Sunday, September 1st: 3;00 am – 11:30 pm

Transportation Map2

  • Driving Directions  Roads will be closing early for the various race courses, so it is advised to avoid driving if possible.  If you are driving, parking will be available in the Mickey & Friends Parking Structure.  Just make sure to leave enough time for traffic delays on the mornings of the races.
  • Costumes This is one of the best parts of Disney races!  Even though I’m not a costume person, I love to see how creative everyone gets! Please note that runners are NOT allowed to wear a face mask of any kind and will be removed from the course if this is violated.
  • Bag Check  Participants must use the clear bag provided at the expo to check any belongings during the race and affix the label with their bib number on the outside.  Bag check will be located in the Lilo Parking Lot/Family Reunion Area.  All bags must be checked by 5:30 am for the 10K and 5:00 am for the Half Marathon prior to heading into the start corrals.  Bags must be picked up by 8:30 am for the 10K and by 10:30 am for the half marathon at the same location.

Staging Map

  • Start Corrals  The start corrals are located on Disneyland Drive between Mickey Way and Paradise Way.  Your corral will be listed on your race bib and you will only be granted access to that corral or one behind you.   You can find your corral placement by printing your waiver and finding the corresponding corral for your bib number.  I will be in Corral E for the Dumbo Double Dare Challenge, so make sure to come say hi!

Corral Area

  • Starting Times  Runners are encouraged to arrive to the staging area no later than one hour prior to the race start time and be in your assigned corrals no later than 30 minutes prior.
    • Saturday, August 31st
      • Disneyland 5K: 5:30 am
      • Disneyland 10K: 6:15 am
    • Sunday, September 1st
      • Disneyland Half Marathon Wheelchair Start: 5:29 am
      • Disneyland Half Marathon Runner Start: 5:30 am
  • Race Bibs  Bibs must be centered on the front of your shirt.  Safety pins will be provided in your race packet at the expo.  Do not bend our fold your bib, as the ChronoTrack B-tag will be affixed to the back of the bib which will be used to track your time.  If your bib is not properly centered, damaged or covered, your time may not be recorded properly.  Your bib will also be used for the on course photographers, so make sure the number is clearly visible…oh and smile for the camera 🙂
  • Pacing Requirements Remember, you must keep a minimum of 16-minutes per mile throughout the race or you will run the risk of being picked up and brought to the finish line.  Keep this in mind if you a planning to stop for character photos.  Those lines can get long and it’s easy to lose track of time.  Pace cyclists will be on the course to let you know if you have fallen behind.
  • Dumbo Double Dare Challenge Participants If you are participating in this challenge, you will receive a wristband after finishing the Disneyland 10K on Saturday.  This must be worn while running the Disneyland Half Marathon.  After completing the Disneyland Half Marathon, you will need to present this wristband at the Dumbo Double Dare tent to receive your medal.
  • Coast to Coast Challenge Participants If you are participating in this challenge, you will receive a wristband when you pick up your bib at the Health & Fitness Expo.  This must be worn while running the Disneyland Half Marathon.  After completing the race, you will need to present this wristband at the Coast to Coast tent to receive your medal.
Looking for the course map?  Want to know what corral you’re in?  You can find the details here!  More information is also available over on the runDisney website. Can’t wait to see you there 🙂

2013 Princess Half Marathon Weekend Final Instructions

Princess 5th LogoFinal race instructions are now available for Disney’s Princess Half Marathon!  It’s only 11 days away princesses (and princes)!  I can’t believe this race is here again…it has been a whole year since my first half marathon!

The following are instructions for the Princess Half Marathon and include all of the information you will need about the race, transportation and other events around the weekend.

2013 Princess FI pg1

2013 Princess FI pg2

If you are looking for information on any of the other events happening during the Princess Half Marathon Weekend, you can find them here:

This year, the Health & Fitness Expo is being held at an all new location…Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort.  I’m actually really excited about this change of venue for the Expo.  If you’ve ever been to the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex for packet pick up, you’ll know that it is a serious trek to get around the facility.  I’ve never been to the Coronado Springs convention facility, but from maps I’ve seen it looks much more manageable.

Princess Expo Map

The Expo will take place on Friday, February 22nd from 9:00 am – 7:00 pm and Saturday, February 23rd from 9:00 am – 6:00 pm.  All race participants  MUST attend the expo to turn in signed waivers (click here to print your waiver) and pick-up race packets, which include your race bib with B-Tag timing devices, race shirt, and goody bag.  The goody bag also doubles as the bag to use for bag check during the race.  This is also where you will receive any commemorative items you may have purchased during registration.  If you are unable to attend the expo, instructions are included on how to have someone pick-up your packet for you.

Because of the new location, it is very important to note the transportation restrictions for getting there.  There will be no parking and no Guest drop-off at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort during Expo hours. You will need to take the event transportation provided at all Walt Disney World Resorts to get to the Expo.  If you are not staying on property, you will have to park at Downtown Disney West Side and take the transportation provided from there.

Here is all of the information you will need for Race Day.

  • Host Resort Transportation  All Walt Disney World resorts, including Shades of Green and Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort, will have transportation available to bring participants to and from ALL events during Disney’s Princess Half Marathon Weekend
    • On race day, bus service will begin at 3:00 am and runners must be on a bus by 4:00 am to ensure they make it into their corrals by the 5:00 am cut-off time.
    • Shuttle service will be suspended between 5:00 am and 7:00 am because of road closures, but will recommence for spectators after 7:00 am.  Traffic into the Epcot parking lot will also be suspended at this time and all cars will be routed to the Magic Kingdom Parking lot where spectators can take the monorail to Epcot.
    • After the race, buses will be set by resort in the Family Reunion Area to take all participants back to their resorts until 10:30 am.
  • Driving Directions  If not staying at a host resort, participants will need to provide their own transportation to all events.  As usual, Disney says to EXPECT SIGNIFICANT DELAYS so make sure you leave yourself enough time.  Road closures will begin at 3:30 am, so you will want to try to arrive at Epcot before then.  If that isn’t possible, be sure to arrive at Epcot and be parked by 4:30 am since it is about a 20 minute walk to the starting corrals from the parking lot and you must be in there by 5:00 am.
  • Costumes This is one of the best parts of Disney races…the costumes!  Runners get so creative and it’s so fun to see.  Please note that runners are NOT allowed to wear a face mask of any kind and will be removed from the course if this is violated.  Who are you dressing up as?
  • Bag Check  Participants MUST use the clear bag provided at the expo to check any belongings during the race and affix the label with their bib number on the outside.  The bag check tents are located in the Family Reunion Area in the Epcot parking lot.  All bags must be checked by 4:30 am prior to walking over to the start corrals.  Bags must be picked up by 10:30 am at the same location.  I checked a bag for the Princess Half Marathon last year and the process was seamless, so I wouldn’t be overly concerned by the process if you are new to runDisney events.
  • Start Corrals  The start corrals are located on Epcot Center Drive.  It takes about 20 minutes to walk to the starting corrals from the holding area, so you will want to head over there no later than 4:30 am.  Your corral will be listed on your race bib and you will only be granted access to that corral or one behind you.   You can find your corral placement by printing your waiver and finding the corresponding corral for your bib number.

    • 5:49 am – Corral C Start

    • 6:03 am – Corral E Start
    • 6:10 am – Corral F Start
    • 6:17 am – Corral G Start
    • 6:24 am – Corral H Start
  • Race Bibs  Bibs must be centered on the front of your shirt.  Safety pins will be provided in your race packet at the expo.  Do not bend our fold your bib, as the ChronoTrack B-tag will be affixed to the back of the bib which will be used to track your time.  If your bib is not properly centered, damaged or covered, your time may not be recorded properly.  Your bib will also be used for the on course photographers, so make sure the number is clearly visible and smile for that camera 🙂
  • Team Bibs  If you registered as a team, you will receive a second commemorative bib with your team name on it.  This should NOT be worn in place of your individual bib or your time won’t be tracked.

New Balance and Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Announce Multi-Year Strategic Alliance

runDisney sneakers…fun!!  Disney announced yesterday a new alliance with New Balance to make them the official running shoe for runDisney, as well as amateur baseball at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex.

With this alliance comes a snazzy new pair of runDisney New Balance 860v3 running shoes.  They are designed after Minnie and Mickey of course.  These are limited  edition shoes and will be released at the 2013 Walt Disney World Marathon Health & Fitness Expo (which started today!) and future runDisney events.

Amanda from Disney Every Day snapped these photos of the the new shoes first thing this morning at the Expo.

Unfortunately, she reported that they sold out VERY quickly and there won’t be any more available over Marathon Weekend.  But if you’re heading out to the west coast for the Tinker Bell Half Marathon, you’ll be able to get a pair there.

Personally, I’m not in love with the design.  While I know red, black and yellow are the classic Mickey Mouse colors, it’s not my favorite color combination.  Fingers crossed this is the first of many designs runDisney and New Balance will be working on together!

What do you think of the runDisney running shoes?  Where you one of the lucky ones to grab a pair?

20th Anniversary Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend Starts Today!

WDW-Marathon

It’s here…it’s finally here!  The 20th Anniversary Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend starts TODAY!!  The Health & Fitness Expo opens at 9:00 am at the ESPN Wide Wold of Sports Complex with vendors and great speakers.  The races kick off tomorrow with the 5K, followed by the half marathon on Saturday and the full marathon on Sunday.

Make sure to review all the details in the final race instructions, as it includes transportation information, corral start times and more!  You should also check out this handy dandy pace calculator that Jenn over at Eat, Sleep, Run Disney put together.

runDisney has also provided these fun (and slightly cheesy) videos full of important information for the weekend.

Update 1/21/13: Videos have been removed from the runDisney YouTube channel.

If you are reading this first thing in the morning, I am probably on a plane headed to MCO.  My plan is to head directly to the Health & Fitness Expo and then check in to my hotel for some relaxation time!  I’m actually not feeling so hot…I think a head cold is underway 🙁  So I’m going to be doing a lot of resting and hydration prior to the big race on Sunday.

Hope you all have a safe journey to Walt Disney World and I hope to see you over this exciting weekend!

The following is all of the information you will need for Race Day.

  • Host Resort Transportation  All Walt Disney World resorts, including Shades of Green and Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort, will have transportation available to bring participants to and from ALL events during Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend.  The only event that transportation will NOT be provided for is the Cool Down Party at Downtown Disney.
    • Monorail service will be available for guests staying at the Contemporary, Grand Floridian and Polynesian Resorts beginning at 3:00 am.  You will need to transfer monorails at the Transportation & Ticket Center, so make sure to leave enough time to get to Epcot.
    • All other resorts will have bus service that will begin at 3:00 am and runners must be on a bus by 4:00 am to ensure they make it into their corrals by the 5:00 am cut-off time.  I have heard many horror stories about traffic around events this weekend, so I would say the earlier the better.  Shuttle service will be suspended between 5:00 am and 7:00 am because of road closures, but will recommence for spectators after 7:00 am.

I will be in Corral G for the marathon, so make sure to come say hi!
