Registration is Now Open for the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10-Miler Weekend

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10-Miler Weekend is coming back for its 2nd year and is now open for registration!  The race weekend has been pushed back a week this year to October 4 – 5, 2013.  Hopefully temperatures will be cooler that week.

Corral C at the Starting Line

Exact times aren’t listed yet, but if the details remain the same the nighttime race will begin at 10:00 pm in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, taking runners to the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and back to the Studios.  Runners will re-enter the park at the Lights, Motors, Action Extreme Stunt Show, wind through the Streets of America and finish in the shadow of The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.

The race is followed by the Disney Villains Hollywood Bash, which will begin at 10:30 pm.  Spectators can purchase tickets to this party and enter before the race is over.  Not only will runners and spectators have exclusive access to the Studios, but most headliner attractions will be open.  The attractions include: Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror (obviously), Star Tours, Muppet-Vision 3D, The Great Movie Ride, and Toy Story Mania!  I’m hoping that some changes will be made to the party for 2013 since it was VERY crowded in the inaugural year.

Also taking place on the race weekend is the Disney Happy Haunted 5k Trail Run and Kids Races, both of which will be taking place at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

Pricing for the events are as follows (these events sold out VERY quickly last year, so register soon!):

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror™ 10-Miler

  • $135 by March 26, 2013
  • $150 between March 27 and May 21, 2013
  • $165 on or after May 22, 2013

Disney Happy Haunted 5K Trail Run

  • $50 per participant

runDisney Kids’ Races

  • $10 per Kids Dash participant
  • $30 per 1-Mile Run participant

Disney Villains Hollywood Bash

  • $54 by May 21, 2013
  • $64 between May 22 and September 4, 2013
  • $74 on or after September 5, 2013

If you participated in last year’s event, you will notice a significant price increase.  A $45 increase to be exact.  I’m going to look into this further, but we can only hope that this means more entertainment on the course and maybe some improvements to the after party.  But still, that’s a significant increase.  I’ve been thinking twice about registering this year and this might be the thing that makes my decision not to.

As usual for most runDisney events, packet pick-up will be required at the race Expo held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex beginning October 4, 2013.  Visit the runDisney event page for more information on all of the events taking place that weekend.

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10-Miler: More Details Revealed!

It’s International Hollywood Studios Awareness Week!  This is the third year Studios Central has been hosting this week in honor of what I agree is the best park in Walt Disney World.  I’ve enjoyed reading it for the past two years and I’m so excited to participate this year!

Ever since the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10-Miler was announced in late 2011, there has been a lot of buzz about this race.  A 10 mile race is a great distance for beginner runners who are looking to take the next step from a 5K, but aren’t quite ready for a half marathon yet, and it gives more experienced runners a new challenge to get a faster time on a shorter course.  Also, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is a favorite attraction at Walt Disney World (it’s definitely my favorite!) and was once popular race theme in the now defunct 13K, which was last held in 2009.  Once the (really cool!) medal was released, the excitement continued to grow and the race sold out soon thereafter.

I’ve never seen a Disney race sell out so fast or have such popularity, which led me to wonder…

  • Why was the decision made to bring back The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror theme and add an additional nighttime race to the runDisney lineup?
  • How many runners will be participating in The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10-Miler?
  • Was Disney surprised by how quickly the race sold out?
  • Can we expect any surprises on the race course given that this is the inaugural year?

Well, the great folks over at Disney Sports were nice enough to provide me with some answers!

Overall, I was glad to hear that they are listening.  Feedback from post race surveys, social media, and letters are all taken into account when forming a new Disney race.  Of course this goes along with many other factors such as season, other resort events, and demand.

For The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10-Miler, they fell that “the theme, along with the new 10-mile distance, is a great combination runDisney fans will be very excited about.  In addition, night races have proven to be extremely popular among runDisney guests, first with the previous The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror™ 13K event and now with the Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon.  [They] feel that a night race is the best way to deliver the thrills and chills of The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror™ and the entire Halloween season at WALT DISNEY WORLD Resort.”  Now really, what better way to kickstart the season than in the shadows of the Tower of Terror?!

Since the race sold out so quickly, I was most interested in how many people were actually registered for the race.  When I ran the Princess Half Marathon, there were over 20,000 runners and I couldn’t imagine that was the case for this race.  Not only would it be unheard of the sell out a race that large so quickly, I couldn’t imagine all of those runners converging on Disney’s Hollywood Studios after the race for the Disney Villains Hollywood Bash.  In fact, the race was originally only open to 8,000 participants, but due to “the overwhelmingly positive response, [they] expanded to 10,000,”  which they weren’t surprised by because the original 13K was so popular.  I think that 10,000 runners is a great number because it will allow for some breathing room on the race course, but will also still maintain the energy of a great Disney race.

Lastly, I wanted to know about any surprises that might be in store given that it’s the inaugural year of this race.  I wasn’t expecting much in the way of an answer because then it would really be a surprise, would it?  They were kind enough to say that “given the race is all about the ‘thrills’ associated with The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror and running at night, I think it’s safe to say the creative minds on our Entertainment team will have a few surprises in store for our runners.”  Well that’s exciting enough for me!  I can’t wait to see everything that will be in store for us.  Let’s hope the majority of that is focused on Osceola Parkway 🙂

I’m really looking forward to getting my next piece of Disney bling…will I see you there?

Registration is Now Open for The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10-Miler Weekend

The newest race on the runDisney lineup, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10-Miler Weekend, is now open for registration.  The race will take place on September 29, 2012 and replaces The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 13K, which was last held in 2009.  As a HUGE fan of this attraction, this race promises to be very exciting!

The nighttime race will begin at 10:00 pm in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, taking runners to the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and back to the Studios.  Runners will re-enter the park at the Lights, Motors, Action Extreme Stunt Show, wind through the Streets of America and finish on Sunset Boulevard at The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.  There will be the usual Disney entertainment on the course and runners can expect a unique inaugural race medal.

The race is followed by the Disney Villains Hollywood Bash, which will be held from 10:30 pm – 3:00 am.  Spectators will be able to purchase tickets to this party and enter before the race is over. While this party sounds great, here’s where my concern begins.  I’m having flashbacks of the inaugural Wine & Dine Half Marathon After Party and the limited space that was available for runners and spectators.  Sunset Boulevard is a very congested area and if this is where the finish line for the race is, how are guests going to get to those headline attractions during the after party.  The Studios overall is much smaller than World Showcase at Epcot and I’m hoping we won’t run into the same issues.

Also taking place on the race weekend is a Family Fun Run 5k and Kids Races, both of which will be taking place at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.  I have to say, I’m a little disappointed about the 5K taking place at the Sports Complex.  The fun of Disney races is being able to run through the theme parks and see areas you don’t normally get to see.  The course description also says that you will be running on various terrains including pavement, grass and sand.”  This doesn’t seem very safe for the many inexperienced runners who participate in these 5Ks.  It’s my prediction that attendance for this race will be very low in comparison to other 5Ks.

Pricing for the events are as follows:

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror™ 10-Miler

  • $90 by March 27, 2012
  • $105 between March 28 and May 22, 2012
  • $120 on or after May 23, 2012

Disney Family Fun Run 5K

  • $50 per participant

runDisney Kids’ Races

  • $10 per child

Disney Villains Hollywood Bash

  • $44 per person by August 31, 2012
  • $54 per person on or after September 1, 2012

As usual for most runDisney events, packet pick-up will be required at the race Expo held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex beginning September 28, 2012.  Visit the runDisney event page for more information on all of the events taking place that weekend.

I hope to see you there as we enter the fifth dimension!!
