RAD Recap for June 15, 2014

Today I’ve been decompressing from our big family barbecue yesterday.  B’s entire family (all 23 of them) came to visit from NY yesterday.  I don’t think we’ve ever had more than 8 people over before so this was quite interesting.  I was nervous, but it turned out to be a really great day!  The food was great, we had a lot of laughs and even some hula hoop contests!

This week I also recapped days 2 & 3 of the CrossFit Games Northeast Regional and took a look at the 2nd week of my CSA…it’s all about greens this time of year!

It’s been quite an exciting week in the world of runDisney!  First let’s start with Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend.  I knew this was going to sell out fast, but the rate it sold out is insane!  The Rebel Challenge (Star Wars 10K & Half Marathon) sold out in a record breaking 26 minutes with all of the other races not far behind.  And faster than you can say Wookie, the entire weekend was sold out in about 2 hours! Pretty incredible.  The big question is…Did you get in?!?

More news from the West Coast this week was the big reveal of the 2014 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend medals. As Katherine pointed out that the ribbons for this year might be cooler than the medals themselves and I kind of have to agree…they are pretty rad!

In other happenings, Richard stopped by to share his transformation story, John was back with more Anaheim Antics and his recap of the Laguna Hills 10K, and I took a look at the Epcot pre-shows in a fun game of Kill, Refurb, Marry.  Do you have a favorite Epcot pre-show?  Here’s mine:

And last, but certainly not least, I want to wish all the dads out there a very Happy Father’s Day! Especially to my Dad…he’s pretty awesome and was the driving force behind my Disney obsession. Without that I never would’ve started on this Running at Disney journey and accomplished some of the most amazing things in my life.  Thanks Dad 🙂

RAD Recap for June 8, 2014

I can’t even begin to explain how happy I am that the summer is finally here and that it is warm outside!  I have been in such a great mood and I even went to the gym 5 days this week!  Who am I?!?!  It’s so amazing how the weather can have a big effect on your overall wellbeing.  I’m seriously thinking it’s time to move to warmer climates…I’m not built for this winter business!

Things have been kind of quiet over here on RAD this week because 1. I think runDisney has exhausted their BIG new for a few weeks and 2. I’ve had a TON of things going on outside of my Disney life…shocking, I know.  But it’s all pretty fun, so you should check it out…

First up were some food adventures!  I shared a recipe for some delicious and nutritious Juice Pulp Meatballs that you must try.  I know it sounds gross, but stick with me on this one.

Next, my CSA started this week (remember CSA Saturdays here 2 years ago?!?) and I got some amazing local veggies to try out!

Everything else was CrossFit related…again, shocking!  Last weekend I spent 3 days in CrossFit heaven at the Northeast Regional competition.  That Friday, I was invited by Reebok to tour their facility, meet with some very inspirational athletes and test out some of their products.  It was a dream come true!

So that has been my life outside of Running at Disney, but there as also be some rad stuff going on over here!  Katie shared her transformation story with us and Danielle returned with some great ways to Love Thy Feet!

Coming up this week I have another great transformation story, information on the Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend registration, an all new Kill, Marry, Refurb segment, and John is back with more Anaheim Antics!

RAD Recap for May 25, 2014

Happy Memorial Day!  I can’t believe the summer is actually here…it’s so nice to finally have some warm weather.  I just love spring and summer here in New England.  My favorite thing (besides not having to wear shoes) is that local veggies are starting to come into season.  I signed up for the CSA at my local farm again this year and can’t wait for that to start.  But until then, I’m filling up on their asparagus!

So the big runDisney news/rumor this week came from a cast member at Disneyland Paris who posted a photo of a button he received after a cast member fun run that said to “Get Ready!” for the 1st Disneyland Paris Half Marathon in September 2015.  Since he posted those photos on Thursday, they have been taken down.  I’m assuming this was something that was not meant to be leaked since there hasn’t been any official word from runDisney.  I’ve also heard rumors about a Star Wars race coming, so hopefully there will be some big announcements coming soon.

In case you missed some of the other fun goings on this week, Cindy stopped by to share her story for Transformation Tuesday, I recapped my visit to the New York World’s Fair Anniversary (you know, where Carousel of Progress debuted!), and Jessica talked about running with Team Challenge for her family.  If you’re new to this blog, I suffer from Ulcerative Colits and Team Challenge is the endurance training team and fundraising program benefiting the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America.  I ran with them in 2012 and it was an amazing experience.  You can read about it here.

Later this week, I am heading up to Canton, MA to support the team from my gym, CrossFit Milford, and a few other local athletes competing in the Northeast Regionals of the CrossFit Games.  It is such a fun event! I had a blast last year and can’t wait for a weekend getaway with my girls!  You can follow all the shenanigans on my Instagram 🙂

Also coming up this week, Ilene will be sharing her story for Transformation Tuesday and I’m thinking of taking a trip out west this week…maybe to visit my favorite lounge that I’ve been missing lately.

RAD Reads and Weekly Review: June 23, 2012

Well this week was MUCH better!  After realizing that “this too shall pass” and getting my head back together, I had a very positive and motivating week.  I do find it ironic that I wrote a post on storms and rainbows on Tuesday morning and then got stuck in a MAJOR storm Tuesday evening on my drive home!  My commute was 3 times as long and I missed my CrossFit class!

Well it was an adventure to say the least.  I was so excited to hit up my local farm, Robert Treat Farm, this weekend and find that their homegrown produce is in full swing!  I opted not to take part in the CSA this year, but that doesn’t mean I miss out on all this goodness:

I also had some life changing Crispy Pork Belly Tacos at Caseus on Friday.  They are now on the summer menu, so if you’re in New Haven at all this summer…go get some, you can thank me later…

Quick update on the Bulletproof Coffee…I woke up hungry yesterday and decided to just have a big cup of Bulletproof Coffee before I went to my yoga class with nothing else.  I didn’t feel jittery at all and was actually pleasantly satisfied for at least 4 hours.  I also felt very alert and ended up having one of the most productive days I’ve had in a while.  Interesting…

Weekly Review
Well, no running this week and here’s why…in typical Sarah fashion, I pushed myself too hard and the hip pain I was feeling last weekend started getting worse.  Actually, BOTH hips started hurting.  Surprise, surprise.  Maybe I shouldn’t have done the WOD on Monday that was ALL SQUATS…just a thought.  Will I ever learn??  Probably not…

My coach noticed I was struggling with the front squats on Monday and told me to back off and do hang power cleans for the rest of the workout instead of the 45 prescribed front squats and row instead of run…probably a good call.  I guess that’s why he’s a coach and I’m not.  Wednesday involved a lot of running and air squats.  I was feeling good since I rested on Tuesday and thought I would be fine.  The pain started about halfway through the air squats…sigh.  Then on Thursday, all was well until the sled pushes.  Needless to say, by Friday my hips have never felt so tight.

I’ve been wanting to incorporate yoga into my practice for a while to help with both running and CrossFit, so I figured this was the best time to start.  Saturday morning I got up and visited a yoga studio nearby, Ganga Flow Yoga, and it was just what I needed.  It felt GREAT to stretch and really open up my hips.  I think this is something I need to start doing at least once a week, not only to stretch out my tight muscles, but mentally center myself.  I forget how rejuvenating yoga can be.

I’m going to try and get some short runs in this week to see how my hips hold up.  Clearly, I’m off my Dumbo Double Dare Challenge training plan but I’m not too worried yet.  I still have 8 weeks to go…wait that’s it?!?!!?

CSA Saturday: Week 20 – The End

I can’t believe it’s been 20 weeks!  Was this the fastest summer or what?!?  I’ve really enjoyed documenting my CSA this year and I hope you have as well.

Looking back, I did get a bit more adventurous with my cooking this year, but I could’ve done better.  Beets…the most difficult item for me.  I love them, but I can only eat so many.  B hates beets and swears they taste like dirt…I don’t get that, but I’ve heard other people say that as well.  Needless to say, he won’t eat them so it was all up to me and it seemed like I was getting them in my basket every week.  I ate most of them, but I have to sadly admit that I had to throw out a few.  Ugh what a waste.  Same was true for a few bunches of swiss chard and kale…I just couldn’t keep up!

So here’s my last basket of the year:

Broccoli, Broccoli Rabe, Pumpkin, Tomatoes, Romaine Lettuce

This is a good final basket for me because I will eat everything here except for the pumpkin due to an allergy.  Yay for one last dish of broccoli rabe and sausage!
