RAD Reads and Weekly Review: June 23, 2012

Well this week was MUCH better!  After realizing that “this too shall pass” and getting my head back together, I had a very positive and motivating week.  I do find it ironic that I wrote a post on storms and rainbows on Tuesday morning and then got stuck in a MAJOR storm Tuesday evening on my drive home!  My commute was 3 times as long and I missed my CrossFit class!

Well it was an adventure to say the least.  I was so excited to hit up my local farm, Robert Treat Farm, this weekend and find that their homegrown produce is in full swing!  I opted not to take part in the CSA this year, but that doesn’t mean I miss out on all this goodness:

I also had some life changing Crispy Pork Belly Tacos at Caseus on Friday.  They are now on the summer menu, so if you’re in New Haven at all this summer…go get some, you can thank me later…

Quick update on the Bulletproof Coffee…I woke up hungry yesterday and decided to just have a big cup of Bulletproof Coffee before I went to my yoga class with nothing else.  I didn’t feel jittery at all and was actually pleasantly satisfied for at least 4 hours.  I also felt very alert and ended up having one of the most productive days I’ve had in a while.  Interesting…

Weekly Review
Well, no running this week and here’s why…in typical Sarah fashion, I pushed myself too hard and the hip pain I was feeling last weekend started getting worse.  Actually, BOTH hips started hurting.  Surprise, surprise.  Maybe I shouldn’t have done the WOD on Monday that was ALL SQUATS…just a thought.  Will I ever learn??  Probably not…

My coach noticed I was struggling with the front squats on Monday and told me to back off and do hang power cleans for the rest of the workout instead of the 45 prescribed front squats and row instead of run…probably a good call.  I guess that’s why he’s a coach and I’m not.  Wednesday involved a lot of running and air squats.  I was feeling good since I rested on Tuesday and thought I would be fine.  The pain started about halfway through the air squats…sigh.  Then on Thursday, all was well until the sled pushes.  Needless to say, by Friday my hips have never felt so tight.

I’ve been wanting to incorporate yoga into my practice for a while to help with both running and CrossFit, so I figured this was the best time to start.  Saturday morning I got up and visited a yoga studio nearby, Ganga Flow Yoga, and it was just what I needed.  It felt GREAT to stretch and really open up my hips.  I think this is something I need to start doing at least once a week, not only to stretch out my tight muscles, but mentally center myself.  I forget how rejuvenating yoga can be.

I’m going to try and get some short runs in this week to see how my hips hold up.  Clearly, I’m off my Dumbo Double Dare Challenge training plan but I’m not too worried yet.  I still have 8 weeks to go…wait that’s it?!?!!?

Friday Feast: Bulletproof Coffee

I’ve been seeing Bulletproof Coffee all over the interwebs lately.  One of my favorite bloggers, Gabby from Gabby’s Gluten-Free, swears by it and I have to say I’ve been intrigued.  If you’re not familiar with Bulletproof Coffee, it is basically coffee blended together with butter and coconut oil.  Sounds gross right? Butter…in coffee?  Well not so fast, it is actually DELICIOUS!

According to Dave Asprey, the Bulletproof Executive, our bodies are craving healthy fats.  By adding grass-fed, unsalted butter and MCT or coconut oil, you will be satisfied and have increased energy for up to 6 hours, which in turn programs our bodies to be more efficient at burning energy throughout the day.  Interesting concept…so I thought I’d give it a try.

I brewed a giant mug of coffee and added that to a blender with 2 tablespoons of Kerrygold unsalted butter and 2 tablespoons of virgin coconut oil.  Oh and a quick aside…if you’ve never tried Kerrygold butter before, you are missing out on one of the great pleasures in life…just sayin’

Bulletproof Coffee1I gave it a good buzz for about 10-15 seconds, basically until it looks creamy and has a nice foam on top.

Bulletproof Coffee2And basically, that’s it!  Super easy.  I have to say the first sip was a little strange because there was a slight greasy film on my lips from all the fat, but I got over that quickly.  This is rich, decadent and simply delicious.  I noticed a bit more energy than usual after drinking this, but I think that was mainly because it is more coffee than I’m used to drinking in one sitting.  It honestly felt like caffeine jitters.  Who knows…

Bulletproof CoffeeSo imagine my surprise when yesterday morning, I saw that this coffee was going to be featured on the Today Show!  Apparently Matt Lauer doesn’t think as highly of it as I do…
