Yesterday runDisney officially revealed the SUPER RAD medals for the Inaugural Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend in January 2015, and I am now having serious regrets about not signing up for these races!
I was fortunate to get to see these first hand at the Wine & Dine Half Marathon Expo this past weekend and let me tell you…they are too cool. Let’s take a closer look!
Star Wars Half Marathon Medal
Here’s a fun fact about this medal that RAD reader Andrew left on the Running at Disney Facebook page:
The 1/2 marathon medal is a replica of the medal that Princess Leia gave to Luke and Han at the end of the original Star Wars movie at the ceremony, it’s the medal of Yavin!!
Well this Star Wars geek finds that super cool!
Star Wars 10K Medal
If you’re a fan of Storm Troopers, this one is for you. I can’t even imagine all of the great Storm Trooper photo ops that will be on the course!
Star Wars Rebel Challenge Medal
Runners who complete both the half marathon and the 10K will receive the Rebel Challenge medal. This is a spinner medal (which I wasn’t aware of when I took the photo!) and Yoda is on the other side! Well, this is by far the coolest of all the medals ever in existence. Yup…it is.
Star Wars 5K
The 5K medallions are fun and colorful…and really, who doesn’t love C-3PO?
This is too cute!! I wish I could run the Kids Races to get this R2-D2 medallion! I think the best part of this is the ribbon. Here’s a look at all the fun ribbons!
Rest assured that I will be having some serious envy issues when Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend rolls around! Which medal is your favorite??
May the force be with you!

As with all runDisney race weekends, this one starts with the Health & Fitness Expo on Thursday, January 15th in the Disneyland Hotel Expo Hall. This will run through Saturday, January 17th and is where you must go to get your race packet for all of the races. I’m sure there is also going to be some amazing merchandise there…I can’t wait to see it!
A unique event during this race weekend is the Wookie Welcome Party. Unlike the Pasta in the Park Party on other Disneyland race weekends, this is a separate ticketed private event taking place in Tomorrowland in Disneyland Park after the park closes to regular guests. This dessert reception will feature numerous photo opportunities with Star Wars characters and select attractions will be open for guests to experience with little to no wait.
Make sure to visit the runDisney event page for more information on all of the events taking place that weekend along with valuable information on hotel rooms, park tickets and the ChEar Squad!
These races are going to sell out FAST! My guess is going to be within 2 hours or so. So you will want to be ready to move at lightspeed tomorrow to get registered….MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU!
Are you planning on running during the Inaugural Start Wars Half Marathon Weekend?

At long last, Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend will be making its Intergalactic arrival at Disneyland Resort in January 2015!! We have been waiting for this ever since the merger between Disney and Lucasfilm took place back in 2012 and it is FINALLY here!
This will be the forth race weekend at Disneyland Resort following in the footsteps of the Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend, Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend and Avengers Super Heroes Half Marathon Weekend. The weekend will be taking place January 15 – 18, 2015 and will include kids races, 5K, 10K, Half Marathon AND the Rebel Challenge! Those completing the 10K and Half Marathon will receive a special Rebel Challenge commemorative medal…too cool!! I have a feeling these are going to be some of the RADEST medals to come from runDisney so far…I mean how can they not be?!?
Registration opens for all of the events on June 10th with a pre-sale for Annual Passholders and DVC Members on June 4th…that’s next week! As with all runDisney events, this will sell out FAST. I would predict somewhere around an hour. Care to take bets?
Looks like my plans for next January might be changing. I am a HUGE Star Wars fan and this is something I’ve been hoping for for quite some time. I’m just not sure how all of this will fit in my budget…sigh… Whatever happens, I’m looking forward to the next few months as more details on the course and photos of the medals are revealed. It’s all so exciting!
May The Course Be With You!
Official press release from runDisney:
Star Wars™ Half Marathon Weekend Makes Its Intergalactic Arrival at Disneyland Resort in 2015
Four-day race weekend is first collaboration with Lucasfilm; Aerospace company Sierra Nevada Corporation to be inaugural event’s presenting sponsor; Race registration opens June 10
ANAHEIM, Calif. (May 27, 2014) – Joining forces with one of Hollywood’s most iconic brands, runDisney is creating another transportive race weekend – the Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend presented by Sierra Nevada Corporation at Disneyland Resort. The intergalactic journey begins January 15 and runs through January 18, 2015.
The Star Wars event is the fourth runDisney race weekend scheduled for 2015 at Disneyland Resort, doubling the number of races held in 2013. The new race weekend offers runners a variety of race experiences for all levels, from Padawans to Jedi Masters – kids races, a 5K, a 10K and a half marathon. And for those who show an event greater strength for the Force, there will be a two-race challenge involving the 10K and the half marathon with a commemorative medal awaiting every finisher.
In addition, there will be a slew of family-friendly events throughout the weekend, including a Health and Fitness Expo and a Star Wars-themed pre-race party, plus popular Star Wars and Disney characters and other entertainment. Registration opens June 10 at www.runDisney.com.
The Star Wars event at Disneyland Resort joins the Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend, the recently announced Avengers Super Heroes Half Marathon Weekend and the Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend.
“This melding of the iconic Star Wars franchise and the runDisney brand creates an ideal race experience that will resonate with core running groups as well as attract new runners to the sport,’’ said Maribeth Bisienere, senior vice president of Disney Sports Enterprises. “We will continue to identify opportunities to collaborate with other Disney franchises and partners to develop more unique runDisney race weekends that will appeal to an increasingly wider range of runners across the country and beyond.’’
“This is an ideal intersection of family, fitness and Star Wars fun for our global, cross-generational audience and runDisney fans’’ said Howard Roffman, executive vice president of Franchise Management at Lucasfilm. “Star Wars is all about reaching deep within to realize your true potential and runDisney embodies that message in a very real way.”
As presenting sponsor of the race weekend, Sierra Nevada Corporation will have a presence throughout the event. Sierra Nevada Corporation, based in Sparks, Nevada, provides rapid, innovative and agile technology solutions and is best known for its Dream Chaser spacecraft, the company’s solution for providing the United States with human spaceflight capability.
“With the passion and creativity of runDisney and Lucasfilm, this race weekend is going to be out of this world, which makes it a natural fit for Sierra Nevada Corporation because we are in a race of our own to take humans into space with our Dream Chaser spacecraft program,’’ said Sierra Nevada Corporation president and chairman Eren Ozmen.
As with other new runDisney events, the inaugural Star Wars event sponsored by Sierra Nevada Corporation is expected to be an instant hit. The new Avengers race at Disneyland Resort sold out in less than two hours. In general, runDisney race weekends have regularly sold out in record time, and last year attracted more than 163,900 runners to Walt Disney World and Disneyland – a 40 percent increase over the previous year, making the runDisney series one of the largest in the nation.
The surging popularity of runDisney events has created significant economic impact on the surrounding communities. For example, in Anaheim it’s estimated that the Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend drives approximately $20 million to $30million in additional economic activity locally by attracting thousands of runners to Southern California. In suburban Orlando, the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend, which is considered to be the largest race weekend in the country, attracts more than 50,000 runners and 50,000-plus spectators, for a total attendance of more than 100,000 in Central Florida.
Will you be traveling to a galaxy far far away in 2015??
