The Epcot International Food & Wine Festival is by far the BEST event at Walt Disney World. This was my 5th year attending the event and I must say that it just keeps getting better every year. The chefs are always looking for new ways to bring innovative dishes to the kiosks and explore more of the world through food.
So when I saw that this month’s topic for Kill, Refurb, Marry was Epcot Food & Wine Booths I got very excited, but then immediately was filled with dread. How could I pick a favorite?! That’s like a parent picking a favorite child! After much agonizing and review of my DFB Guide to the Festival, I have narrowed down my choices….with a few honorable mentions for good measure 🙂
Kill – Singapore
I have to be honest, this is a booth I always avoid. While the Seared Mahi Mahi looks good, everything else at the booth looks completely unappetizing. My first reaction when I saw the Lemongrass Chicken Curry this year was that it looks like vomit, seriously. This photo actually makes it look ok, but in person…nope.
Then there is the Singapore Sling. This just sounds like a tropical version of a Long Island Iced Tea where you mix together a bunch of things and call it a cocktail. Plus anything with gin immediately heightens my gag reflex.
It is rare that you will find someone that actually enjoys the food at this booth and most people have strong opinions against it. Take it from my friend Rick who had an interesting review from last year’s festival. So let’s move on from Singapore and add something a bit more appealing like Thailand!
Refurb – Terra
This was a tough one sine I find something redeeming at most booths. I decided to go with Terra because I feel like there are so many interesting Vegan dishes out there that don’t have to include “fake meat.” I was a vegetarian for over 8 years and I never enjoyed any of those products. The texture was always very strange to me and I always wondered what kind of additives were being used to mimic those flavors. Doesn’t the texture of this year’s CraB’less CraB Cake look odd??
While I haven’t tried anything from Terra yet this year, I did try the Chick’n dish last year and my predictions were correct. However I really enjoyed the sauces and sides that were served with the Chick’n. My hope is that the chefs get a little more creative with natural vegan ingredients in the future.
Marry – Scotland
Scotland made it’s Food & Wine Festival debut last year and I loved everything they had to offer. You can actually see me gushing over everything in this video…even the Vegetarian Haggis which I thought I was going to hate. Well this year Scotland has outdone themselves. It’s hard to believe, but they have actually gotten BETTER!
Along with the Vegetarian Haggis, they have added a Seared Sea Scallop with Spinach-Cheddar Gratin with Crispy Bacon AND a Fresh Potato Pancake with Smoked Scottish Salmon and Herb Sour Cream. OH. MY. Both of these dishes are absolutely amazing. When I visited they actually ran out of bacon for the scallop (a punishable offense!) and the dish was still outstanding. I can’t wait to try it again with the bacon…I might actually pass out. On top of that, all the drinks at the booth are wonderful.
Scotland, you are everything a Food & Wine Booth should be. I Love You!

Even though I am a firm believer that you MUST have a car when visiting Walt Disney World, I still love Disney transportation. There is something wonderful about seeing the monorail whizz by and to here the boat horns in the distance. The busses always remind me of that time from my childhood when were were returning from a long day in the parks and a glow necklace I was playing with from the evening show broke and the liquid went in my eye. Ahhhh the memories. They are uniquely Disney and always bring a smile to my face.
So here we go with my choices to kill, refurb and marry the Disney Parks Transportation systems.
Kill – Friendship Boats
I actually love the Friendship Boats…they hold a sense of nostalgia in me. Actually the entire Crescent Lake area is very nostalgic for me because that area was built around the time that I begin having strong memories of The World. And really, it’s so gorgeous there, isn’t it?
So how could I want to kill the Friendship Boats that are a staple here? Because the are SO DAMN SLOW!!! Oh man that thing just moves at a snails pace. And have you ever been on one on a hot day and it sounds like the air conditioning is blasting, but it just feels like hot air blowing on you? I mean, if I’m going to sweat I might as well walk to my destination because I will probably get there faster and burn some calories along the way.
I love the Friendship Boats but I think at this point they are beyond repair…they just need to be replaced.
Refurb – Monorail
There is nothing more iconically Disney than the Monorail. It is a staple in both Walt Disney World and Disneyland. However both could use and upgrade.
Let’s start with the original Monorail in Disneyland. I love this thing! The windows open and it winds through the trees and attractions in Tomorrowland…so fun! However, it lacks air conditioning. I happened to visit Disneyland once during a particularly hot streak and that monorail was like a sauna. Simply having the windows open did not provide enough breeze to make it bearable. An upgrade here is needed.
Now my favorite Monorail is in Walt Disney World. I could say “Por favor mantengase alejado de las puertas” by the age of 5. That is still the only Spanish I know, but that is another story.
I love flying high above the Seven Seas Lagoon and whizzing through the Contemporary Resort, but have you taken a whiff inside one of those things lately?? Whoa. They smell musty and moldy. Plus the air conditioning units drip on the seats! Another upgrade please!
Marry – Motor Launches
These are those smaller, classic looking boats that provide transportation between the Magic Kingdom and the Grand Floridian, Polynesian and Wilderness Lodge Resorts. There is also a line that circles Bay Lake and stops at the Contemporary, Wilderness Lodge and Fort Wilderness Resorts.
There is something so charming about these boats that get me very excited each time I get to ride one. They seem like a through back to simpler times. Plus, unlike their friend the Friendship Boat, these things are speedy. It is definitely the fastest way to get around the Seven Seas Lagoon if you are going to the Poly or Grand Flo. An added bonus is that because they are small, you typically will have a very friendly skipper to chat with on your journey.

Overall, I am more of a Disney theme park fan than a Disney film fan. I know this seems strange because what would the parks be without the films, but for me it is more about the experience and complete immersion that you get in the parks. So this month’s topic, Songs From Disney Animated Films, took a bit more thought rather than just having my choices pop right into my head. Well that is besides my Marry song…we all have our favorites 🙂
Kill – “A Smile and A Song” from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
I think it’s pretty clear that I’m not a big fan of Snow White. She was the Disney Princess I chose to refurb back in May. While I feel like she needs a good makeover, I would be very happy if this song was no longer in her repertoire. I love all of the cute little animals in this scene and how can you not wan to squeeze that adorable singing bird, but damn her voice is annoying! It’s borderline ear bleeding, it’s so shrill. No thanks!
Refurb – “What Makes the Red Man Red?” from Peter Pan
Yeah…this song is pretty racist and sexist. Well I guess that a lot of Peter Pan is when you look at it. Yes the world was a different place when this film was made over 60 years ago, but that still doesn’t make the song less offensive. I’m not sure if I had a kid that I would want them going around singing lines like “When the first brave married squaw he gave out with a big ugh, when he saw his Mother-in-Law.” I mean, it’s funny but probably not the best thing for kids to hear…well that and all the “Injun” talk.
Marry – “Everybody Wants To Be A Cat!” from The Aristocats
I mean obviously! Who wouldn’t want to be a cat?! I don’t just love this song because the message speaks to me, but it is also from my favorite Disney movie of all time! Scat Cat and the Gang sure know how to put together a great jazz song for Thomas O’Malley, Duchess and the kittens. It is fun and romantic all in one! You just can’t help but smile and dance with this one comes on. Now if we could only get it played in the parks more often, maybe with more characters from the film in a meet & greet???
Now before I get a ton of hate mail and angry comments…yes I am aware that there are some horribly racial and stereotypical aspects to this scene in the movie, but if you remove that and just listen to the song, it’s fun. And really, I love it because I really want to be a cat!

This is the perfect topic in the heat of the summer! But where to begin?! There are so many Air-Conditioned Attractions in Walt Disney World….and thankfully so! Could you imagine surviving the Florida heat and humidity without it?!? Since there are so many options to choose from, I decided to stick with one park for this one and show Disney’s Hollywood Studios some love. Lights, Camera, Action!
Kill – The American Idol Experience
This is the 2nd time that I’ve chosen The American Idol Experience to kill, the first was for live musicals in the parks. Can you tell I’m not a fan?? Again, this goes back to wasting prime space on an outdated show. I know that the contestants go through an audition process to get into the show, but it seems like you might run the risk of watching bad karaoke in there. Now maybe if they had a bad karaoke show that also included some cocktails…that could be entertaining 😉
Refurb – The Great Movie Ride
This is by far one of my favorite attractions, but at this point it is purely for nostalgic reasons. I remember being in awe of this when it first opened 25 years ago…ugh I feel old! But that’s the problem, nothing has changed in 25 years! Yes they updated the final movie a while back, but that is still incredibly dated. This attraction needs a complete redo.
Everything from the beginning through the western should stay…that’s historic. And Indy, leave that in there because those films are a classic. Alien, I think we can probably some up with some more current options for the Sci-Fi/Horror genre. Tarzan, Casablanca, Fantasia…none of that resonates with people today. Let’s update that. Wizard of Oz is not only a classic, but the set is gorgeous so that should stay as well. Last but not least…the film…probably the easiest thing to change…get on it!
Marry – Star Tours
I have always loved Star Tours and it has just gotten better since the refurb back in 2011. You never know what to expect and each ride is very exciting! The queue is fun and the gift shop makes for some great photo ops. It is definitely one of my favorite ways to cool off on a warm day at the Studios!

These months are sure going by fast because once again it’s time for another Kill, Refurb, Marry! This months topic is Epcot Pre-Shows. When I first heard of this topic, the first thing that popped in my head was the pre-show from The Living Seas. You know, when it rained and rained and rained…the deluge…followed by a trip on the hydrolators, oh how I would like to marry that pre-show! Sadly it has been permanently killed so I had to come up with some other options. Here we goooooo….
Kill – Test Track
OK…I know what you’re going to say…Sarah, this was just refurbed…what?! Well, I just don’t like it!
Honestly, I just don’t understand the new theme at Test Track. I wasn’t sure what I was doing when I was building my car…none of it made sense. There were no instructions and the whole thing felt very rushed. Then when on the attraction, it was like Cars met Tron and we were being taken on some sort of trippy ride that just doesn’t make any sense! Why is that MAC truck covered in neon?? Where are we going?? Ok screw the pre-show…this whole attraction just needs a redo
Refurb – Soarin’
Let me start by saying that I love the pre-show at Soarin’ I mean how can you not love Puddy?! However, it just feels more like loading instructions rather than a full on pre-show. What if it could be more…
The queue for Soarin’ has been known to push the 2 hour mark. Yes, they have added some interactive games in there, but for the most part that is the more boring queue EVER. Why not expand on the story? Make a mini-film for guests to watch about the crew and maybe some silly mishaps they encounter along the way. Laughter is the best way to forget about you boredom of standing among giant white walls for hours…am I right??
Marry – Ellen’s Energy Adventure
This is by far the best pre-show in all of Epcot…hands down.
Ok, it might be a bit dated (Alex Trebek still had a moustache!), but the humor is still very relevant. Also, I think this might be one situation where the pre-show is better than the attraction itself. We all know the jokes about
Universe of Energy Ellen’s Energy Adventure…it’s where you go to get a rest from the heat and take a mid-day nap. I have to agree that the attraction is a bit of a snoozer and I have taken my fair share of naps there. However I am always alert and often laughing out loud during the pre-show. STUPID JUDY!
So those are my choices…what about you? Which Epcot Pre-Shows would you Kill, Refurb & Marry??
