Friday Feast: Lapu Lapu at Disney’s Polynesian Resort

Lapu_PolyI have heard rumors about the famed Lapu Lapu from the Tambu Lounge at Disney’s Polynesian Resort.  It is a cult classic and to say I haven’t had one was a travesty.  So a few weeks ago when I was hanging out at the Magic Kingdom with my bestie Amanda, a few dark clouds started rolling in.  She asked if I had ever had a Lapu Lapu (which neither of us had) and we made the wise decision to head over to the Poly to try them out.

As soon as we arrived it started POURING rain, so clearly we made the right decision.  Our great friends Rick and Leslie joined us and we knew this was going to be an epic afternoon, even though we were out of the parks.  Now I’m not a big fan of sweet drinks so I was hesitant to order an entire Lapu Lapu for myself.  If you’re not familiar with the drink, here is what’s included:

Lapu RecipeBasically a lot of rum and fruit juices served in a pineapple.  To me, that’s a hangover in a glass.  So Amanda ordered one and I wanted to taste it before ordering my own.  Our bartender, Wayne (who is apparently very famous on the Twitter), started making her drink along with Rick’s Backscratcher.  He had clearly made many of these in his time.

This drink is massive and since it is served in a hollowed out pineapple, it gives you that feel like you are on a tropical vacation…not in the middle of central Florida :)

I tried the Lapu Lapu and was instantly hooked.  It wasn’t too sweet, it  wasn’t too strong, it was just right!  The kind of just right that sneaks up on you and slaps you in the face later in the night…but I digress.  Needless to say, I ordered my own and the rest was history.

Sarah & LapuI think this has become my new favorite afternoon activity.  Having a cocktail in a pineapple while relaxing in a Polynesian paradise…how can you go wrong?!?  And here’s a tip…if you want a second drink, ask for a “lapu lapu refill.”  It’s much less expensive and you can just pour it right into your pineapple for maximum effect.  Score!

Have you had a Lapu Lapu??

  6. Looks yummy! I guess you can still visit the Poly even if you’re staying at another resort, right? I am heading back there for marathon weekend in January and will have to add this to my list!
