RAD Reads and Weekly Review: April 14, 2013

Big week in the world of runDisney!  2014 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend events went on sale this week and a few races sold out in record time!  The new WDW 10K sold out in less than 7 hours, followed by the 5K a few days later, then the all new Dopey Challenge, which is 48.6 miles in 4 days.  That’s quite amazing.  I registered for the 10K and the Half Marathon…after my less than stellar experience at the Marathon this year, I don’t think I’m ready to try that again any time soon.  Did you sign up for a race for Marathon Weekend?

Other Disney news this week is a bit sad…one of the original Mouseketeers, Annette Funicello, passed from her long struggle with Multiple Sclerosis.  My first memory of Annette actually wasn’t as a Mouseketeer, but in the 1987 movie Back to the Beach.  I LOVED this movie growing up.  I was very sad to hear of her passing and that she suffered for so long.  She is truly an American icon.

Weekly Review
This was a week of ups and downs when it came to my workouts.  I had some great WODs at CrossFit and a not so great run.  Monday was full of squats and some heavy ones in that, so when I went out for a run on Tuesday my legs were tight.  I should’ve taken this into consideration when choosing my running shoes, but I decided to use my new Saucony Kinvara 4s (full review to come later) to go out for the Kick Ass 5K.

I should’ve just stuck with my usual running sneakers because nothing went well about this run.  I really don’t think I’m made for minimalist running.  Plus, the ultimate irony of the run was that my colitis (which hasn’t been great lately) decided to show itself at about 1.35 miles in…ugh.  So my steady pace was slowed to a mix of slow walking and sprinting to get home as fast as I could.  Sadly I only got 2.65 miles in.

Thankfully I had a much better day at CrossFit the following day.  The WOD consisted of lots of running and lots of squatting…nothing my Brooks and some KT Tape couldn’t handle 🙂  Good news is that with all the running that day, I completed the Kick Ass 5K and then some.

You can see my complete WODs this week including a bagillion squats on my page on dailymile.

Sunday: Rest
Monday: CrossFit: Back Squats, Hang Squat Cleans & Knees to 90
Tuesday: 2.65 mile run (Kick Ass 5K…almost…)
Wednesday: CrossFit: Running (1.25 miles), Wall Balls, Thrusters & Overhead Squats/Lunges
Thursday: CrossFit: Split Jerks, Push Press, Air Dyne & Farmers Carry
Friday: Rest
Saturday: Rest

Besides the WDW Marathon races I signed up for this week, I also registered for the Long Branch Half Marathon on May 5th.  I’ve been wanted to run a nice flat race for a while to see what I’m actually capable of.  My Disney races always take much longer because of all the photos and the pure fun of it all.  But now with these new stricter time requirements in place, I want a faster time in the books.  I thought that this would be the perfect race because the finish line is right on the beach where B and I got married…how cool is that?!  Now I guess I better get some good training runs in…ha!

Do you have any fun races coming up?

  1. Running the 5K with my wife and daughter; and then I’ll be doing the full on Sunday with my brother-in-law, who happens to be doing the Goofy…so he’ll be running with my sister, who’s doing the half on Saturday! We have a big family running weekend next January!!!
