The Skinny Rules

I saw this great list posted over on Dimples Does It and thought about how I already apply some of these rules to my life, so why not try for more!

So here are the rules I currently follow:

  • Rule 3: I definitely make it a point to eat protein with every meal.
  • Rule 6: I eat at least a cup of blueberries (frozen in my smoothies and fresh for snacks) and always have an apple with peanut butter for a mid-day snack.
  • Rule 8: I know how to read food labels.
  • Rule 10: I don’t add sweeteners to my food, with the acception of Agave to my lemon salad dressing.
  • Rule 13: The last time I had fast food was years ago and fried foods are very rare (I’m a sucker for fried shrimp).
  • Rule 14: I have a power smoothie every morning for breakfast during the week and usually eggs on the weekends.
  • Rule 15: I love to cook, so I make dinner most nights and always make enough for leftover for lunches.
  • Rule 17: Must have veggies with every meal (even breakfast!).  My CSA comes in handy for this one.
  • Rule 19: Recently, I’ve been making it a point to get 7-8 hours of sleep a night and feel much better for it!

9 out of 20 is pretty good!  So that leaves 11 new habits to create.  Maybe I can add one in each week.  That seems like a manageable goal.

This week I’m going to tackle Rule 1: Drink a Large Glass of Water Before Every Meal – No Excuses!  Doing this tricks your body into feeling fuller so you don’t eat as much.  I drink a lot of water as it is, so it should be fairly easy to add these additional glasses in.  I might even attempt Rule 12: Make One Day a Week Meatless.  I could most definitely make that work.

So what do you think of these rules?  Do you currently incorporate any of them into your life?

  1. Nice! I actually do all of them except 7 and 18. I am curious as to why he says no carbs after lunch… Carbs aren’t bad, per se. There are good ones and bad ones. The carbs that come from vegetables, for example. I wonder if he means a specific type, there?

    • Wow…that’s impressive! I’m not sure why he’s referring to. Maybe he’s referring to what most people think of as carbs…bread, pasta, etc… That would seem to make more sense than veggie carbs. You probably have to buy the book to find out ;)

  2. Great list but 18 and 7 would be the last ones I try. I like my snack at 7:30 which makes sure I am not hungry before bed and I eat most my carbs after lunch. Those would be really hard for me. Thanks for sharing.

  3. I do most of them… I dont do 6,7,12,13 and 18 all the time.

  4. I always drink water first thing! I try to drink a 20 oz glass while walking my dog and it is a great habit! I pretty much follow everything else, except I mostly eat apples only when they’re in season, and I’m not 100% banishing carbs after lunch. My trainer always yells at me not to eat carbs with dinner (which is so hard when you have to feed a man, too).

  5. THIS LIST REALLY CONTRADICTS ITSELF. GO TO BED HUNGRY, SLEEP RIGHT? CAN’T SLEEP IF YOU ARE HUNGRY. EAT UR VEGGIES AND FRUIT EVERYDAY NO EXCUSE, DON’T EAT FATTY OR FRIED FOOD EVERY. YET PICK ONE DAY TO SPLURGE. WELL IF I AM GOING TO SPLURGE I AM GOING TO EAT CRAP I AM NOT SUPPOSE TO EAT.
AND I AM VERY PROUD OF MYSELF I ACTUALLY FOLLOW MOST OF THESE RULES ALREADY. I DRINK A LOT OF WATER ALL DAY AND BEFORE MEALS. I DON’T LIKE SALT OR FRIED FOODS. I ACTUALLY GO MEATLESS A FEW DAYS AWAY (I ONLY EAT RED MEAT ONCE A WEEK IF I AM LUCKY) AND I EAT FRUITS AND VEGGIES EVERY DAY ALL DAY. THE ONLY THING I DON’T REALLY FOLLOW IS THE GOING TO BED HUNGRY. I WILL WAKE UP WITH A MASSIVE HEADACHE IF I GO TO BED HUNGRY PLUS I REALLY WON’T SLEEP BECAUSE MY STOMACH WILL BE HURTING AND GROWLING.
