How is it July already??? This year has gone by faster than any I can remember. Let’s just hope the summer slows down a little bit so we can enjoy the warm weather and fresh veggies out there. Make sure to savor every moment.
While you’re basking in that warm (HOT here in the Northeast) summer air, check out these RAD Reads to pass the time. There was a lot of good stuff out there this week!

After weeks of allergies, coughing, a sinus infection and a colitis flare, I finally feel like my usual self again! What a great feeling! Well that lasted until Thursday. I think I was so excited I was feeling well, that I forgot about that important thing called rest. I was trying to make up for all of the time lost. When will I ever learn?!? About a half mile into my run, I felt a sharp pain in my right ankle from apparently landing incorrectly on my foot. I kept going and the pain came back about a minute later. I slowed down to a walk, but I was still not feeling right. Once I took my sneaker off, the pain got worse and my ankle felt week. I immediately slapped some ice on it and took a few Motrin. Later that night, I went out and bought an ankle brace that I’ve now been wearing for the better part of two days.
Here’s my total week of exercise, which I think let up to the ankle pain:
Sunday: 3.6 mile run
Monday: Spinning – 1 hour
Tuesday: 2 mile run & upper body toning – 20 minutes
Wednesday: Spinning – 1 hour
Thursday: 1 mile run & upper body toning – 20 minutes
Looking back, five days in a row of lower body cardio was probably not a good idea. Going forward with my training, I’m not going to do more than two days in a row without a rest day. Maybe I’ll through in some yoga on the rest days. My problem is that once I get in the groove, I hate to slow down. I just have to keep reminding myself that rest is as important in training as the running itself. Anyone have some good ankle strengthening exercises?
I did manage to get some toning work in this week and I think I finally found a routine that I enjoy! There was a pre-swimming workout in this months issue of Whole Living Magazine that I thought I would try, and It’s actually fun! It’s a full body workout that focuses mainly on the upper body. Give it a try…all you need is a resistance band.
My quest to lose a marathon was foiled this week by a 2.3 pound gain. This was a bit frustrating since I’ve been watching what I’ve been eating and obviously getting my exercise in. This could be due to fluid retention from my new exercise routine, which is normal in helping your muscles recover. Hopefully, I’ll be down a few for my weigh-in tomorrow. My clothes seem to be fitting better, so at least I know my body is changing even if the pounds aren’t coming off.
My ankle is feeling better, so I’m going to try for a 4 mile run today…fingers crossed I’ll be able to get through it without doing major damage to my body! I’m definitely going to wear the brace for this run just in case.
